Family Background and Early Life
Amartya Sen was born in a prominent Bengali family in Shantiniketan, India. His father, Ashutosh Sen, was a professor of physics, and his mother, Amita Sen, was a professor of history at the local college. Growing up in an intellectually stimulating environment, Sen was influenced by the liberal ideas of his family and the vibrant cultural life of Shantiniketan, founded by Rabindranath Tagore.
